Each week we provide a comprehensive guide to all that is going on and The Weekend Guide this week covers the Friday evening of October 24 through to Sunday 26 October. Friday Night (24.10.14)
The Canterbury Tales, 7.30pm, St Mary’s Church, £21. Geoffrey Chaucer’s ‘The Canterbury Tales’ are a flagon-filled feast of fun, brimmed full with chivalric romance, beautiful maidens, swindling merchants, bawdy wives and flatulent monks. Live music, puppetry and enchanting story-telling combine in brand new stage production devised and written by Guildford Shakespeare Company, where every night the audience will decide the outcome!
AntiNowhere League, 7.30pm, The Boileroom, £10. The Boileroom in association with Transmission Music Group presents Anti Nowhere League ‘Burn ‘Em All’ 2014 UK Tour. Come down to listen to the band that formed in the 1980s, plus support acts Slagerij and The Cottonettes.
The Ghost Tour of Guildford, 8pm, Holy Trinity Church, Adults £5, Children £3. The Ghost Tour of Guildford has been amusing, informing and repulsing the public for over a decade. Surrey’s premier spooky attraction can boast it has never knowingly given anyone their money back! Discover a side of Guildford you never knew you wanted to know. It’s a truly horrible way to spend an evening.
The Small Hand, 8pm, The Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, tickets from £24.50. From the million selling author, and writer of the most terrifying stage play ever presented, Susan Hill’s The Small Hand takes you on a brand new journey that is the stuff of nightmares. See our review of the show HERE.
Neville’s Island, 8pm, The Mill Studio, £13. Four out-of-condition, middle-aged businessmen sent off on a team-building exercise in the Lake District succeed in being the first people ever to get shipwrecked on an island on Derwentwater! Presented Lighted Fools Theatre Company.
Whitney & Stilwell, 8.30pm, Bar des Arts, free entry. Acoustic Duo Whitney & Stilwell are a local female covers band performing a mixture of popular songs from 60′s to modern. They have an extremely varied repertoire of songs old and new and will be playing a mix of male and female pop/rock/country covers. You’re bound to be singing along to a few on the night!
Saturday (25.10.14)
Guildford New & Nearly New Baby/Toddler Sale, 10am, Guildford Spectrum, no cost. There will be a range of good quality branded clothes and toys for sale in the nearly new section and a select choice of independent retailers from Guildford and the surrounding areas will be selling new items such as hand-crafted toys, clothes and lots more! Make sure you get there early, items go quickly!
The Big Draw, 10am, G Live, no cost. As part of G Live’s Family Day – drop in to make a willow basket with artist Judith Needham. Create a unique basket out of natural materials and use your drawing skills to decorate the label with items to keep safe for the future. Suitable for ages 3+, but parent participation essential.
October Half Term Family Fun, 10.30am, RHS Wisley, normal garden costs apply. Because plants can’t get up and run away from their predators, they have evolved an extraordinary array of defensive mechanisms against insects and animals. Learn all about caterpillar spit as you plant seeds, carve a pumpkin, design a spider cupcake, climb a tall tree, hear tall stories and make a pumpkin hat.
Halloween activities, 11am, Clandon Park, normal entry, £2 Kids. Bring the family during the autumn half-term, for kids arts and crafts activities in aid of this year’s Halloween and a spooky trail around the Clandon Park Estate garden.
The Magic Porridge Pot & Other Tasty Tales, 11am & 2pm, G Live Bellerby Studio, Adults £10, Kids £8. On today’s menu there is a trio of traditional and tasty tales to tantalise and tease. For starters we have the magic pot that won’t stop producing porridge. The main course is a delicious soup made from the scrummiest stone in the world, and for pudding (if you can catch it) we have a walking, talking Gingerbread Man who is just asking to be munched! Oh crumbs!
Saturday Afternoon Organ Recital, 2.30pm, St Nicholas’s Church, no cost. Short organ recital at St Nicolas’ Church, Bury Street, given by Gillian Lloyd, Organist at Guildford United Reformed Church. The recital starts at 2.30pm with free entry and a retiring collection for the St Luke’s Healthcare for the clergy. Refreshments are available after the recital.

Woking FC v Boreham Wood, 3pm, Kingfield Stadium, Adult £15, U16s £3. The Cards take on Boreham Wood on Saturday, hoping to reach the 1st Round Proper of the FA Cup for the first time in four years. But they will have to play a lot better than they did in last weekend’s surprising home defeat at the hands of bottom-of-the-table AFC Telford.
Farnborough FC v Grays Athletic (friendly), 3pm, Paddy Power Park, no cost. This Saturday at Farnborough Football Club, meet the players and challenge them to pool or darts at 12.30pm and then pay what you like to watch them take on Grays Athletic in a Mid-Season Friendly at 3pm!
Aldershot Town FC v Torquay United, 3pm, Electrical Services Stadium, Adult seating/standing £19/17, Juniors seating standing £7/£5. Aldershot Town drew their second consecutive game last Saturday, leading at half-time before conceding a second-half equaliser at Dartford. This weekend sees the Shots take on Torquay United for the second time in two months, but on this occasion it’s in the Fourth Qualifying Round of the FA Cup.

Ripley Bonfire 2014, 6pm, Ripley Village, free entry. As well as the bonfire and spectacular firework display there is an extensive funfair, food stalls, a bar which has a perfect view of the bonfire and fireworks with live music. Torchlight procession starts at 7.10pm, bonfire to be lit at 7.30pm and firework display from 8pm.
Surrey Storm Netball vs Wales, 7pm, Surrey Sports Park, £10. Surrey Storm Netball will host the Welsh National Team in their first pre-season friendly ahead of the 2015 Netball Superleague season. Watch Storm take on Commonwealth Games outfit Wales at Surrey Sports Park as the squad take to the court looking to impress Coach Tamsin Greenway before she picks her final 15.
Martha Tilston, 7.30pm, The Boileroom, £12. Martha Tilston has grown up immersed in music. So much so that she thinks of song writing as the coat she wears on the journey, not the destination she is travelling to. It has taken her to many interesting places; opening the acoustic stage at Glastonbury; touring the far reaches of the globe; gaining a BBC nomination for best new-comer at the folk awards; recording and releasing several of her own albums, being a guest vocalist for Zero 7, and meeting and playing with some of the world’s most inspiring musicians.
James Acaster, 8pm, G Live Bellerby Studio, £14. James Acaster has something he’s been meaning to tell you. He’s been putting it off for some time. You might want to sit down. It’s time for another tremendous tour and what better way to celebrate than attending? Expect whimsical rabbiting on and awkward physicality throughout. Don’t expect to leave unchanged. Marty Wilde’s Rock ‘N’ Roll Party, 8pm, G Live, tickets from £24. Original ‘Dreamboats’ Marty Wilde, Eden Kane, John Leyton join forces with The Wildcats in Marty Wilde’s Rock ‘n’ Roll party. Performing their own hits and collaborating live on stage, teen idols of their day, Marty, John and Eden show us how Rock n’ Roll with its fusion of sound and rhythm shaped the style of music that we listened to then and still do today.
Hundred Watt Club Burlesque and Cabaret, 8pm, The Electric Theatre, £12. Classic striptease comes from voluptuous showgirl Bettsie Bon Bon whilst Peter Antoniou provides psychic sideshow entertainment. With a taste of good old fashioned British music hall from award winning burlesquer Shirley Windmill and an act to chill you to the bones from Hundred Watt boss Lena Mae, this is one night NOT to be missed! Glamorous vintage dress encouraged but not enforced! Strictly for ages 18+
Will.i.an, 8.30pm, Bar des Arts, free entry. Will.i.an are a Hampshire based acoustic duo playing songs from the 80′s to the current day. With a varied set to please any crowd, Will.i.an make an indelible impression on those that see and hear them. Playing hits from such bands as Green Day, Guns n Roses, Bryan Adams and Ed Sheeran and other popular rock and pop acts.
Sunday (26.10.14)
Guildford Lightning v Kingston Diamonds, 6.30pm, Guildford Spectrum, free entry. If you want to watch some ice hockey in Guildford this weekend, then why not head down to watch our ladies in action this Sunday. Last time out they beat Slough 4-1 on the road and they will be hoping to make it two out of two against Kingston for their first home game this season.
Open Mic Night, 7.30pm, The Boileroom, free entry. Open Mic Night returns to the Boileroom this autumn after nearly two years in hibernation. Launching on Sunday 26th October, The Boileroom will be giving local artists the opportunity to showcase themselves from 8pm with a featured act to close the night. Open to all ages.
The Electric Comedy Club, 7.45pm, The Electric Theatre, £8. Make your weekend feel much longer with a Sunday night of great comedy with The Electric Comedy Club that takes place in the Cafe Bar – cabaret style. The bar is open all night and there are five great acts, this month featuring: Yianni Agislilaou, Mark Palmer, Stu Turner, Lea Rose Emery and David Tsonos.
